Panthers News · Emily Carrillo Named as New Diamond Ranch Head Girls Basketball Coach

Panther Family,

We are excited to announce that our own DRHS teacher, Emily Carrillo, will be taking over as our Girls Varsity Basketball Coach this season. She comes to the program with a wealth of experience and as a bonus she is an on campus coach teaching in our English Department.

Prior to this season, Carrillo served as an assistant coach at her alma mater, the University of La Verne, for the 2019-2020 season. While at the University of La Verne, the Leopards finished 2019-2020 with the most wins since the program’s 2008-2009 season.

Before assisting at the University of La Verne, Carrillo spent three seasons as an assistant coach to the Diamond Ranch Panther team for the 2014-2017 seasons. Carrillo also served as an assistant and JV girls basketball coach at West Covina High School from 2012-2014.

Carrillo is an athlete from West Covina where she ran cross-country, played basketball, and jumped track at Covina High School. After high school, Carrillo played NCAA Division III basketball at the University of La Verne where she was a 4 year starter. During her time as a player, the Leopards won a conference championship in 2007 and played in 2 NCAA championship tournaments in 2007 and 2008. Carrillo was named to the First Team All-SCIAC in 2009 and 2011. Additionally, Carrillo holds 3 top ten records at the University for scoring, field goal percentage and rebounds.

Carrillo holds a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of La Verne. She currently teaches English III and Yearbook at Diamond Ranch High School. Prior to teaching at Diamond Ranch, Carrillo taught 7 years at Simons Middle School in the city of Pomona.

Coach Carrillo is passionate about creating a winning culture both on campus and on the court. The foundations of her coaching philosophy are rooted in player development sportsmanship, and mastering the basics of discipline, character and grit.
